Changes in Education

Have you noticed that the field of education is rapidly changing? I started teaching 13 years ago and have noticed major changes. Teacher responsibilities are becoming more and more. We drive our instruction for data and how do data analysis and data dives. We have content, interdisciplinary, team, and collaborative meetings. We are to maintain continual communication with students and parents. We are to develop rigorous, meaningful, engaging, technological, and diverse daily plans. We are to keep grades updated and have assignment grades in within 48 hours.

Parents Trying to be Kids Friends

In all of my years of teaching I have noticed a trend that is starting to pick up steam: the parents who state that their child is their best friend. I am sorry, but that is not the case. If you firmly believe that your child is your best friend than you have lost the respect of not only your child but they are totally taking advantage of you.

You may think that your kid is going to be open and honest with you, but let's be real. Having taught teenagers for 13 years I have seen them lie to their friends, lie to their parents, and lie to me in order to get freedom or anything to swing for them. As an adult, you should be the one there to support your child, be their biggest fan, and also be willing to discipline. You are not someone who can be the best friend. Your child will not tell you their deepest, darkest secrets. They will save that for their friends.

Living the Dream

It is January 1 which means that many educators are headed back to school. Now this can be a time of great struggle for educators. We've had a few days living in "the free world." No rushing at lunch, going to the bathroom whenever you want, not hearing your name so many times you are sick of it, and most importantly, relaxation time.

We jump back in right now into the heart of midterm and final exam season. Students wanting to know how to fix their grades, raise their grades, and parents wanting to know what has happened with their child's grade.

Rest assured dear educator that this too shall pass. I work with a brand new teacher and he has the montra we all did when we came out of college: I can change the world! He is a great guy, has a lot of passion, and definitely has a bright future. However, me being the grizzled vet teacher, I have been preparing him for what is coming.
